About Us

Why TISA MAX?

We decided to build TISA MAX while serving a school client shortly after the rollout of TISA. We realized that being exceptionally thorough in matching for Direct Certification is very difficult and yet very important in Tennessee. We had been slowly and continually improving our algorithm for this client over 6 months when we realized the desire to solve this computational problem once and for all—and serve the entire state. The roll out of TISA has significantly changed the funding landscape, and Direct Certification is no longer a way to help students qualify for free- or reduced-price school lunches—it is central to the funding formula for any district serving a significant population of economically disadvantaged students.

As former educators, we care about school funding because we know the tradeoffs that each district must make and the difference that additional funds can make in terms of new buildings, maintenance of existing buildings, salaries, supplies, copiers. We truly enjoy helping schools and districts maximize their TISA funding by claiming what is allocated by the law but not easily found without technical matching wizardry. We know how important resources are to teachers and students, and it’s our joy to help schools find the matches they are currently missing.

Now two years into the development of TISA MAX the algorithm is now far beyond what we initially thought was possible. Even when a small tweak leads to 0.1% additional matches, it makes sense to labor over this tweak when it could mean millions unlocked for serving students statewide.

Our Team

About Peter VanWylen, Founder & TISA MAX Lead

A former high-school math and science teacher, I have now been working in education data for 15 years. Currently focusing on data science solutions, machine learning, and various research questions, matching has become one of my central professional interests and specialties.

My other actively developed matching work includes a project in the adoption space as well as nightly finding matching duplicates across the database of 1.5 million asteroids using just their six orbital parameters.

United InfoLytics was created to bring the very best that modern analytics and data science offers to schools and nonprofits. We are pleased to offer TISA MAX as an outflow of that focus.

About Nate Mulder, Fractional Data Analyst

I am a history teacher turned data professional. I love to unpack complex stories and solve complex, multilayered problems. My experience as an educator informs my people-centric approach to data analysis, and I strive to tell comprehensible, meaningful stories that help leaders and teams make confident decisions. I focus on databases, platform integrations, SQL, dashboards, BI tools, and custom no-code apps and spreadsheets that provide my clients with up-to-the-minute insights and lasting solutions. I have a special soft spot for creating and analyzing surveys, turning feedback from stakeholders into meaningful transformations. Recently I have been working in the AI space as a prompt and system instruction tweaking expert.

Our fractional data services are something we are excited to offer. Embedding deeply in schools helps us truly understand the needs and opportunities. TISA MAX was born out of this daily work where we solve problems for clients based on whatever their current top priorities are. Upon realizing the unique important of direct certification in Tennessee, we began turning TISA MAX into a service that’s ready to plug into any district’s data and get results in a few days to a few weeks.
